A technical launch can be correct and still fail to change the customer workflow. The deployment gap is the distance between a system operating and the intended outcome becoming durable.

Where value stalls

The gap often appears after the technical milestone. Users have not changed behaviour, operating teams do not own the new process, edge cases are accumulating and the product team cannot distinguish a one-off request from a repeatable market signal.

When ownership ends at launch, these problems become somebody else’s queue. When ownership is limitless, the FDE becomes permanent custom support. The operating model must define an end state and a feedback route.

Use the deployment loop

Discover, scope, build, deploy and productise are connected movements. A failure in deployment may reveal weak discovery. A repeated build pattern may expose a missing abstraction. Productisation sends the learning back into the product, tooling or playbook.

Deployment creates leverage only when the field teaches the product how to improve.

Measure beyond launch

  • Intended users can complete the target workflow.
  • Operational ownership and recovery paths are explicit.
  • The customer outcome is observable, even if it takes time to mature.
  • Repeated patterns are captured for product and delivery teams.
Decision prompt

Name the exact event that ends FDE ownership. If the answer is “go-live,” test whether adoption and product learning have an owner.
